Geoffroy's Sideneck Turtle

Phrynops geoffroanus

Turtle 4

You can meet the Geoffroy’s sideneck turtles in the Amazon River Aquarium. These turtles are named for their unusual way of tucking in their heads. Unlike most turtles, they can’t pull their heads straight back into their shells. Instead, they bend their necks sideways and tuck their heads along the edge of the shell — which is how they get the name “sideneck.”

Geoffroy’s sideneck turtles spend much of their time in the water, where they are excellent swimmers. They feed on a variety of foods, including fish, insects, and plants, making them important for keeping rivers and wetlands healthy. When resting, they often bask on rocks or logs to warm up in the sun before slipping back into the water.
