Mrs Fischer's new home!

Mrs Fischer, our Fischer’s Turaco, has spent this month settling into her delightful new home. Designed just for her, and custom-built by our tireless team, the habitat is intended to reflect a wild Turaco’s preferred environment, featuring a multitude of horizontal perches, branches to tip-toe across with her specially adapted feet, and a variety of living plants from her homeland in the African tropics.

We also welcomed a new arrival, another Fischer’s Turaco, a young male called Flynn. Whilst he is presently staying in the Amazonica glasshouse, using Mrs Fischer’s old exhibit, we are excitedly planning to introduce the two birds when the time is right, and hopeful that they will get along well. The two habitats share a thin wall, so they should be able to hear each other vocalising and gradually become accustomed to each other’s presence, whether the choral courting has been a success we will only know when they meet for the first time.

In the wild, Fischer’s Turaco numbers are still in decline, with potentially as few as 1500 remaining, so in order to help support the species, we are part of the EAZA breeding programme that aims to secure their long-term future. For this reason, Flynn and Mrs Fischer are colossally important to our ongoing conservation efforts.
