Salmon Pink Birdeater Tarantula

Lasiodora parahybana

SL231

The salmon pink birdeater is one of the largest tarantulas in the world, reaching up to 28 cm across when fully grown! Native to the rainforests of Brazil, it gets its name from the pinkish hairs on its legs that stand out against its dark brown body. Despite the dramatic name, it rarely eats birds — its diet mostly includes insects, frogs, lizards, and the occasional small mammal.

Like other tarantulas, it uses its powerful fangs to inject venom that helps it digest its prey. When threatened, it may flick tiny, irritating hairs from its body to deter predators. Although it looks fearsome, this giant spider prefers to stay hidden in burrows and only comes out at night to hunt.
