Water bananas are native to Madagascar and a member of the Araceae (Aroid) family of plants. It is the only member of the genus Typhonodorum– you can find its 30cm North American relative – Peltandra virginica – in the pond in the outside garden.

This species has no relationship to banana plants (Musa spp) ,they are called this due to the shape of the seed pod resembling banana fruit.
