Ginger
Zingiberaceae

The ginger sold in shops is the underground stem (rhizome) of the plant Zingiber officinale. There are over 1600 types of ginger—other recognisable plants in this family are cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) and turmeric (Curcuma longa).
Ginger has been traded since ancient times as both a spice, medicine, food and cosmetic. Scientific studies show it is an effective aid to digestion and combats morning sickness by calming muscles in the gut. The species name ‘officinale’ is often used for plants that have medicinal use or have been used by apothecaries.
