Vine of the soul

Banisteriopsis caapi | Malpighiaceae

Flor Jagube 2[1]

Also called “Vine of the Dead”, this vine has been brewed with chacruna (Psychotria viridis) for thousands of years by indigenous groups in the Amazon basin to make ayahuasca—a tea.

The tea is drunk as a cleansing and spiritual healing medicine, for religious ceremonies and coming of age celebrations.

Ayahuasca has not been approved and deemed safe by formal medicinal trials, but the plant is being researched for treatments for depression and anxiety.
