Ocellate River Stingray
Potamotrygon motoro

You can spot the ocellate river stingray in the Amazon River Aquarium at The Living Rainforest. They are freshwater stingray found in the rivers of South America, including the mighty Amazon. Its round, flattened body is patterned with beautiful yellow-orange rings, called ocelli, which help it blend into the sandy riverbed. Like other stingrays, it spends much of its time buried in the sand, with only its eyes and spiracles peeking out as it waits for food to swim past. It feeds on small fish, worms, and crustaceans, which it detects using special sensors that pick up tiny electrical signals from its prey. While their tail has a venomous barb for protection, these stingrays are generally shy and prefer to avoid people.
