Silver Dollar
Metynnis argenteus

Silver dollars belong to the characid family and are related to tambaqui. They are native to the Tapajós River basin in Brazil, where they prefer shallow, slow-moving waters with plenty of plants. These plants provide both food and shelter, and silver dollars often form shoals (groups) to stay safe from predators. Their round, flat bodies and shiny silver colouring help them blend in with the light reflecting off the water, making them harder for predators to spot.
Find our shoal of sliver dollars in the Amazon River Aquarium located in the Amazonica Glasshouse.
