Tropical Pitcher Plants
Nepenthaceae

Nepenthaceae, commonly known as tropical pitcher plants, are fascinating carnivorous plants found in rainforests across Southeast Asia. Instead of catching insects with sticky leaves like some plants, they use deep, tube-shaped “pitchers” filled with digestive liquid. Unsuspecting insects are attracted by nectar around the rim and slip into the pitcher, where they are slowly digested. This clever adaptation allows the plant to get nutrients in nutrient-poor soils, helping it thrive in challenging rainforest environments.
You can find our tropical pitcher plants in Lowland Glasshouse near the entrance to Small Islands.
