Mrs Fischer is our beautiful Fischer’s Turaco, currently residing in the Amazonica glasshouse while her home in the Lowlands is being renovated. Sadly, she lost her partner Pharaoh earlier this year and now lives on her own. Now in her 20s (well beyond the average 15-year lifespan of Fischer’s Turacos in the wild), Mrs Fischer is enjoying a well-deserved retirement. Her renovated enclosure will be specially designed to give her a comfortable and enriching home for her golden years.

She’s an important part of our history

Over the years, Mrs Fischer has made a remarkable contribution to her species’ breeding programme, raising several chicks that have gone on to have young of their own. The Fischer’s Turaco is listed as Near Threatened, facing declines due to habitat loss and past trapping for the pet trade. In the 1980s and early 1990s, hundreds were exported from Tanzania for the cagebird market, and today their numbers continue to fall as their natural habitats disappear.
