Ringed Teal Duck

Callonetta leucophrys

IMG 6047

The ringed teal is a small, colourful duck from South America, often found in forested wetlands, rivers and lagoons. Males are especially eye-catching, with a chestnut breast, spotted belly, and a bold black ring around their neck that gives the species its name. Females are more softly patterned in browns and greys, which helps them blend into their surroundings while nesting.

Unlike many other ducks, ringed teals have long claws that allow them to perch on tree branches as well as swim in the water. They feed on seeds, fruits and small insects, dabbling on the water’s surface or foraging along the shore. These lively little ducks are often seen in pairs or small groups and are known for their gentle, whistling calls.

Our ringed teals are free-roaming in the Amazonica Glasshouse but can usually be found perch by the Amazonica Pond.
