Magic Bean

Mucuna pruriens | Fabaceae

mucuna mucuna pruriens samen

This plant is a type of legume (bean), often known as the magic bean or velvet bean. It is one of our fastest-growing plants, and our horticulturists are constantly trimming it back as it races up into the roof.

When raw, this plant contains high levels of L-dopa (a form of dopamine), which can be toxic to people. However, when carefully processed and used in the correct dosage, L-dopa is an important treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s affects brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical needed to control movement. Once the L-dopa is removed, the beans are safe and nutritious to eat, and they can also be roasted and ground to make a coffee-like drink.

This plant is a nitrogen fixer, which means it takes nitrogen from the air and turns it into a form that plants can use in the soil. Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for healthy plant growth. The magic bean is often planted to improve worn-out soils so crops like maize can be grown again. This helps farmers reuse the same land and reduces the need to cut down rainforest to create new farmland.
