Yellow-footed Tortoise
Chelonoidis denticulatus

The yellow-footed tortoise is a large, slow-moving tortoise from the rainforests of South America. Its name comes from the bright yellow scales on its legs. These tortoises are mainly herbivores, feeding on fallen fruit, leaves, and flowers, but they will occasionally eat small insects or carrion. They spend most of their time on the forest floor, using their strong legs to move through leaf litter and undergrowth. Despite their slow pace, they are excellent at hiding from predators, often retreating into their hard shells when threatened. Yellow-footed tortoises can live for several decades and play an important role in the rainforest by helping to disperse seeds and keep the forest floor healthy.
Our yellow-footed tortoises can be found in the Amazonica Glasshouse.
